Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. What’s the reason why women live longer than men? And how is this difference growing over time? We only have partial evidence and the evidence isn’t sufficient to reach an informed conclusion. We are aware that behavioral, biological and environmental factors play a role in the fact that women live longer than men; however, we do not know how significant the impact to each of these variables is.

We know that women are living longer than males, regardless of weight. But, this is not because of certain non-biological aspects have changed. These variables are evolving. Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Some are more complex. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.

Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men
The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. We can see that all countries are over the line of parity diagonally. This implies that a baby girl in every country can expect to live longer than her brothers.

The chart above shows that the advantage of women exists everywhere, كيفية ممارسة العلاقة الزوجية فى الاسلام the country-specific differences are huge. In Russia, women live for 10 years longer than males. In Bhutan the gap is less that half a year.

In the richer countries, the women’s advantage in longevity was previously smaller.
We will now examine how the gender advantage in life expectancy has changed over time. The following chart shows the gender-based and female-specific life expectancy at birth in the US in the years 1790-2014. Two aspects stand كيفية ممارسة العلاقة الزوجية فى الاسلام out.

First, there’s an upward trend: Men and women in the US live a lot, much longer today than a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

The gap is growing: Although the advantage of women in life expectancy was once very small but it has risen significantly over time.

You can confirm that these principles are also applicable to other countries that have data by selecting the “Change country” option on the chart. This includes the UK, France, and Sweden.
