Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. Why do women live so more than men do today and how have these advantages gotten bigger over time? There isn’t much evidence and we’re left with only limited answers. We know there are biological, زيوت تطويل الشعر psychological as well as environmental factors which play a significant role in women living longer than men, we do not know what percentage each factor plays in.
In spite of the precise amount of weight, we are aware that a large portion of the reason women live longer than men in the present and not previously, has to do with the fact that a number of important non-biological aspects have changed. These variables are evolving. Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. There are other issues that are more intricate. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.
Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men
The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. As you can see, all countries are above the diagonal line of parity – it means that in all nations baby girls can expect to live longer than a newborn boy.1
The chart below shows that even though women enjoy an advantage everywhere, cross-country differences are often significant. In Russia women live 10 years longer than men. In Bhutan the gap is less than half a year.

In countries with high incomes, the advantage of women in longevity was not as great.
Let’s see how the female longevity advantage has changed in the course of time. The next chart plots male and female life expectancies at birth in the US between 1790 and 2014. Two things stand out.
There is an upward trend. Both genders in the United States live longer than they used to a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.
Second, the gap is growing: Although the female advantage in terms of life expectancy was quite small, it has increased substantially in the past.
