Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. What makes women live more than men do today and why has this advantage increased over time? There isn’t much evidence and we only have partial answers. We know that biological, behavioral and environmental factors all contribute to the fact that women have longer lives than men, however, we do not know how significant the impact to each of these variables is.

We know that women are living longer than males, regardless of weight. However, this is not because of certain biological or non-biological factors have changed. What are the factors that are changing? Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Some are more complex. For زيوت تطويل الشعر example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.

Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men
The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. As we can see, every country is above the diagonal line of parity – which means that in every country a newborn girl can expect to live for longer than a newborn boy.1

The chart below shows that while there is a female advantage everywhere, cross-country differences could be significant. In Russia women have a longer life span than males; while in Bhutan the difference is less than half one year.

__S.19__
In countries with high incomes, the advantage of women in longevity was previously smaller.
Let’s examine how the female longevity advantage has changed over time. The next chart compares the male and female lifespans when they were born in the US between 1790 and 2014. Two points stand زيوت تطويل الشعر out.

First, there is an upward trend. Both genders in the United States live longer than they were a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

Second, there’s an ever-widening gap: female advantage in terms of life expectancy used to be very small however, it has increased significantly in the past century.

By selecting ‘Change Country by country’ in the chart, you will be able to check that these two points apply to other countries with available data: Sweden, France and the UK.
