Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. What’s the reason why women are more likely to live longer than men? Why has this advantage gotten larger over time? We have only a small amount of evidence and the evidence isn’t sufficient to support an unambiguous conclusion. We know there are biological, psychological and environmental factors which play a significant role in the longevity of women over men, we don’t know the extent to which each factor plays a role.

In spite of the precise number of pounds, we know that at least a portion of the reason women live longer than men do today but not in the past, is to relate to the fact that some key non-biological factors have changed. What are these new factors? Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Certain are more complicated. For example, ماذا يحدث بين الزوجين في الحمام بالصور there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.

Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men
The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. As you can see, every country is above the diagonal line of parity – this means that in all countries the newborn girl is likely to live for ماذا يحدث بين الزوجين في الحمام بالصور longer than a newborn boy.1

This graph shows that although women have an advantage throughout the world, the differences between countries can be significant. In Russia, women live 10 years longer than males. In Bhutan, the difference is less that half a year.

In the richer countries, the longevity advantage for women used to be smaller
Let’s take a look at how the female longevity advantage has changed over time. The chart below shows male and female life expectancies when they were born in the US during the period 1790 until 2014. Two points stand out.

First, there is an upward trend. Both genders living in America are living longer than they did a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

Second, the gap is growing: Although the advantage of women in life expectancy was tiny but it has risen significantly in the past.

It is possible to verify that the points you’ve listed are applicable to other countries that have data by clicking on the “Change country” option in the chart. This includes the UK, France, and Sweden.
